Brick Haley - 2011 Defensive Line Coach of the Year

Brick Haley - Louisiana State University

CoY-Logo-360-500FootballScoop is proud to announce that Brick Haley (LSU) is the 2011 FootballScoop Defensive Line Coach of the Year presented by SpeedTracs.

Haley has spent time as a coach at both the NFL and major college level, spending 10 years on the sideline for BCS schools. This is Haley’s third season with the Tiger’s and he has already seen three of his defensive linemen taken in the NFL draft (LSU has had a defensive lineman drafted in each of the last eight years). Screen Shot_2011-12-13_at_12.07.40_PM

Haley’s front four have anchored one of the top defenses in the country all season. As a defense, LSU ranks near the top in almost every major statistical category. The Tiger’s are #2 nationally in opponent’s yards per play (3.96), and #3 in tackles for loss on the year (98). The LSU defense also ranks #2 nationally in scoring defense allowing less than 11 points per game (10.5). Oregon and West Virginia are the only teams who have been able to put up 21 points or more on the Tigers this year.

The defensive front for Haley is among the deepest in the country and they are young with most of their production coming from Sophomores. The Tigers have consistently been able to get quality production from their seventh or eighth guy and that has allowed them to keep everyone fresh in the rotation. An opposing offensive line coach told FootballScoop, "Brick's got about 9 guys that would start for anyone. They bring it every play and they are strong, fast and well coached. Their defensive line is what sets them apart from everyone else."

Ball carriers and quarterbacks alike have seen their fair share of the LSU defensive line behind the line of scrimmage. Two of the most feared pass rushers, Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo, are in the top 40 in the nation in sacks (Montgomery – #29, Mingo – #39), with each of them turning in almost a sack per game. Against Alabama, Montgomery turned in a two sack performance, while Mingo’s biggest game came during a two sack performance against Auburn. Oh, and who can forget the visual of Mingo chasing down Oregon's LaMichael James? Montgomery and Mingo have also combined for 26.5 tackles for loss, ranking each of them in the top 54 in the nation (Mingo #44 – 13.5, Montgomery #54 – 13.0).

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football.  The finalists (Haley, Rodney Garner - Georgia, Ted Gill - Michigan State and Steve Stripling - Cincinnati) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. A panel of coaches including previous recipients determined the winner.

Previous winners of the Defensive Line Coach of the Year award are Dick Bumpas (TCU, 2008), Jim Panagos (Central Florida, 2009) and Bill Kirelawich (West Virginia, 2010).
