Photos: Minnesota breaking out white helmets for Friday's Texas Bowl

For the first time this season, Minnesota will ditch its traditional maroon helmets for a special white lid in Friday's Texas Bowl. Instead of ushering in change for the sake of change, though, the Gophers' helmets will have a special meaning tied to each aspect of the helmet.

On one side will be the traditional "M" logo, while the other side features each player's number. A stripe runs down the middle, paying tribute to the program motto "Brick by Brick", which is written out on the front and back bumpers. The white lid harkens back to the helmets Minnesota wore in the 1960's, a decade in which the Gophers claimed one national championship, two Big Ten titles and appeared in a pair of Rose Bowls.

Minnesota will face Syracuse Friday night at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN.
