The Scoop on DeWayne Walker to the Jacksonville Jaguars
We learned Tuesday at the Senior Bowl that New Mexico State head coach DeWayne Walker is leaving to become the defensive backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
We have also heard that offensive coordinator Doug Martin, who served as the Aggies' offensive coordinator in 2011 and recently rejoined the program after spending the 2012 season at Boston College, is a strong possibility to succeed Walker. Martin went 29-53 as the head coach at Kent State from 2004-10.
Walker went 10-40 in four years at New Mexico State and returns to a role he is intimately familiar with, after serving as the defensive backs coach for the New England Patriots, New York Giants and Washington Redskins. Walker has a total of nine years experience in the NFL.
Sources tell us that Pete Carroll was instrumental in helping land Walker in Jacksonville. Carroll's defensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks, Gus Bradley, was recently named the Jaguars' head coach, and Walker was Carroll's defensive backs coach in New England (1998-99) and at USC (2001).
After a one-year stay at USC, Walker spent a total of four years as the defensive backs coach for the New York Giants (2002-03) and Washington Redskins (2004-05) before working as the defensive coordinator at UCLA from 2006-08. Walker was named the head coach at New Mexico State on Dec. 31, 2008.
Walker's departure is the 29th head coaching change in FBS in the 2012-13 off-season, extending the current record.
