Saturday did not go well for Tennessee, falling 41-0 at home to Georgia on a day where Peyton Manning was being celebrated for his College Football Hall of Fame induction. The Tennessee coaches wanted to wash the taste of that loss out of their fans’ mouths by offering them their favorite dish: some good old red meat in the form of recruits. Yes, Saturday may have been rough, programs in this situation often say, but look, better days are ahead.
One problem: the Vols did not have any new commitments to turn public. Tennessee’s 2018 class claims 23 pledges, but none since Aug. 24.
Without a new recruit to display, Tennessee coaches did the next best thing. The recruiting stuff put together some graphics proclaiming that their current commits were indeed still committed to Big Orange, and then got those recruits to tweet them in a clearly coordinated public-relations effort.
Ending any doubt this was a coordinated effort, Jones has retweeted 10 such messages (and counting) since Monday afternoon.
Jones and the Tennessee coaches are clearly feeling the heat of a frustrated fan base. With no game on Saturday, the staff is fighting back with the best tools they have at the moment.
