Scroll down 247Sports's list of the top pro-style quarterbacks in the class of 2018 and you'll see all the usual suspects. There's Clemson at the top, followed by USC. They're joined by the likes of Miami, Michigan, Stanford, Texas, Ohio State, and then you get to an unusual one at No. 13: Princeton.
Brevin White, a 4-star signal caller out of Paraclete High School in Lancaster, Calif., committed to Princeton back in July. Here's what he said at the time in an interview with Scout:
"I took a lot of visits during this process and I came to realize what I wanted in a school," White said. "I wanted a strong football program with a coaching staff that was passionate about winning but was also very focused on education. Princeton offered the best of both worlds for me and I didn't see any reason to put this off any longer.
"I attended their camp and it wasn't like most of the camps I had done before. It was an all-day camp and I was able to experience the coaching style of Coach (Bob) Surace, the head coach and Coach (Sean) Gleeson, the OC. I really like both guys a lot as coaches and as people and had a great vibe while I was out there. I liked the campus and the opportunities after football and it just felt right for me."
With Signing Day approaching Wednesday, it was a matter of time before the big dogs started sniffing around to see if this commitment would stick, if a guy with Power 5 offers really wanted to play in the Ivy League.
Lo and behold, the biggest of the big dogs started sniffing: Alabama.
White took an official visit to Tuscaloosa last weekend and came away impressed. White's priorities were put to the ultimate test possible: Do you want an elite education while playing less-than-elite football, or do you want a less-than-elite education while playing elite football?
White chose the education.
And now we can remember 2018 as the year Princeton beat Alabama for a 4-star recruit. A tip of the cap to Surace and his staff here.
