The 2014-15 FBS head coaching carousel spun for five full months. June Jones’ Sept. 8 resignation at SMU started the spinning, Jim Harbaugh’s return to Michigan in late December brought it to a temporary stop, and then John Bonamego’s hiring at Central Michigan brought the cycle to a full stop almost five months to the day later.

With apologies to Patrick Stevens, the originator of this idea, it’s time for the second annual look at the list of all 128 FBS head coaching tenures.

Before we get to the list, a few notes.

– Bob Stoops is now the second-longest tenured coach, at age 54 and heading into year 17 in Norman. He’ll tie Bud Wilkinson for the second-longest run in Oklahoma history and, in theory, could still be doing this 10 or 15 years from now.

– Gary Patterson is now in the top five, and Bronco Mendenhall is now in the top 10.

– Akron’s Terry Bowden now represents the exact median of FBS coaching job tenure. He was hired Dec. 22, 2011.

– Mark Stoops has coached two seasons at Kentucky and has been on the job longer than nearly half his peers.

– Bob Davie and Rich Rodriguez, with three seasons under their collective belts, are now in the top 50.

– Art Briles ranks 21st on the list, having just completed his seventh full season as Baylor’s head coach. Bobby Petrino has taken three jobs since then.

– One final note: UAB has dropped football, but the number stays steady at 128 thanks to Charlotte joining Conference USA this fall.
