Joe Moorhead will be the next head coach at Mississippi State, Brett McMurphy, USA Today's Dan Wolken and ESPN reported Tuesday night.
Moorhead spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Penn State. Prior to that, Moorhead spent the entirety of his career in the Midwest and Northeast and is a graduate of Fordham.
If that makes him seem like a fish out of water in Starkville, well, that was the same background the last guy had and that seemed to work out okay.
Prior to Penn State, Moorhead spent three seasons as the head coach at his alma mater, guiding Fordham to a 39-13 record with three FCS playoffs appearances. He parlayed that success into the job as Penn State's offensive coordinator, helping the Nittany Lions to a 21-5 mark with a Big Ten championship following his arrival. (Penn State was 14-12 in its first two seasons under James Franklin.) The Nittany Lions boast one of the most dynamic, balanced offenses in college football, ranking in the top 20 nationally in scoring, yards per play and passing efficiency.
At Mississippi State Moorhead will inherit senior-to-be quarterback Nick Fitzgerald and running back Aeris Williams, players tailor-made to jumpstart Moorhead's spread system.
