In the wake of Mike London’s departure, Virginia has sought one trait above all others: head coaching experience.

Sources tell FootballScoop the Cavs’ search for London’s replacement has focused only on head coaches, and we understand Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun, Cal head coach Sonny Dykes and former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano are among those being considered. We have also heard some speculation that former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford could be in the discussion as well; although we have not confirmed this.

We also understand former Texas head coach Mack Brown has sought the position but has not received an interview as of this time. We understand that there has been considerable chatter around Charlottesville that Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford Jr. is a candidate, however sources tell FootballScoop that he is not as of this time.

Dykes has been connected to the open Missouri job, but his name has gained momentum with Virginia of late.

If and when Dykes leaves Berkeley, his departure could create an interesting domino effect. We understand the administration at California would consider bringing Tedford back for a second tenure as the Golden Bears’ head coach. Tedford, who compiled an 82-57 mark as Cal’s head coach from 2002-12, resigned as the B.C. Lions’ head coach earlier this week in order to pursue open college coaching positions.

Update: Virginia’s Scout site reported Western Kentucky head coach Jeff Brohm is likely to interview early next week.¬†WKU hosts Southern Miss in the Conference USA championship Saturday.
