There are a lot of well-publicized facts about Central Michigan head coach John Bonamego we're all aware of.
For example, shortly after being named head coach at his alma mater he waged a public fight against cancer and was announced cancer-free in November of 2015, he's led the Chippewas to a 21-18 mark the past three seasons, including an 8-5 season last year along with three straight bowl trips.
However, one lesser-known fact about coach Bono is that he walked onto the Central Michigan football team as a wide receiver after graduating from Paw Paw HS (MI) back in in mid-80's. After graduating he got right into coaching on a journey that led him from Mount Pleasant HS, to overseas as a player / coach, and eventually into the NFL as a special teams coordinator before landing his first college head coaching job at his alma mater.
Over the weekend, during the team's annual coaches vs. Seniors softball game, coach Bono called out senior tight end Logan Hessbrook and announced that he'd been awarded a full scholarship.
As if a former walk-on awarding a current walk-on a scholarship isn't rare enough...this may be the only time a football scholarship has been awarded to someone in cut-off jean shorts too.
