Coach of the Year: Finalists for the defensive and special teams Coach of the Year awards presented by ProGrass have been announced. Offensive finalists were announced yesterday.
Catholic University (D-III – Washington, DC): Lindsey Wilson (NAIA – KY) defensive coordinator Mike Gutelius has been tabbed head coach.
FIU: According to Pete Thamel of SI, former Fresno State offensive coordinator Dave Schramm has opted not to take the offensive coordinator job on Butch Davis’ staff, after initially accepting the offer.
Oregon: AD Rob Mullens said at Willie Taggart’s introductory press conference that Oregon’s assistant salary pool will be between $3.7 and $4 million. The current pool is $3.6 million, according to the Oregonian’s Andrew Greif.
FIU: FIU has announced Kenny Holmes as defensive line coach.
Georgia State: South Carolina assistant coach Shawn Elliott will be the new head coach at Georgia State, USA Today’s Dan Wolken reports. Multiple other outlets have since reported the same.
Lindsey Wilson (NAIA – KY): Lindsey Wilson College is accepting applications for its Defensive Coordinator position. This is a 12-month, full-time position with benefits. Qualifications include: minimum of a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred; previous successful coaching experience, with college experience preferred. Western Michigan: PJ Fleck and WMU are engaged in active contract negotions on a new deal, accorindg to The Detroit News, and things are “close” to being finalized. Athletic director Kathy Beauregard later confirmed the confirmed that they are negotiating before adding that the talks are “elite“.
Dakota State: Dakota State University in Madison, SD is looking for a football graduate assistant to start in January. The graduate program is a Master’s in Educational Technology. This program from Dakota State is one of the best MSET Programs in the country. Experience coaching at any position will be considered. Video, Equipment, and recruiting experience a plus. Compensation is a stipend of $12,000 and 2/3 tuition reduction. Cost of living is also very affordable in Madison. This program is a 1-year Master’s program and a commitment longer than 1 year is not required. An undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher and a GRE score is required for admission to the grad program. Georgia Southern: Sources tell FootballScoop Georgia Southern approached New Mexico offensive line coach Saga Tuitele about joining their staff. We hear Tuitele opted not to pursue the opportunity.
Texas: Michael Huff, a former Thorpe Award winner for the Longhorns, as joined the staff as a quality control assistant working with the defensive backs.
Campbellsville (NAIA – KY): Campbellsville University is seeking two full-time assistant coaches, offensive line and linebackers. Campbellsville is a Christian university and candidates must adhere, promote and contribute to the Christian environment. Only applicants with at least three years college coaching / recruiting experience should apply. Urbana (D-II – OH): Urbana University seeks applicants for a full-time assistant coach who will serve as the defensive coordinator for the Blue Knight football program. In addition to these duties, the position will be responsible for other duties as assigned by the head coach. Previous collegiate defensive coordinator experience is preferred. Interested applicants should send their resume, cover letter and references to [email protected] noting “Assistant Football Coach” in the subject line of the email. Interviews may take place at the AFCA Convention in Nashville in January.
Ole Miss: The program has announced that co-offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach coach Dan Werner will not return. Also, assistant AD of high school relations Barney Farrar is no longer part of the staff.
LSU: Ed Orgeron will receive a one-time payment of $675,000 for his role as the interim head coach, per Ross Dellenger, who adds that Steve Ensminger will receive a one-time lump sum of $75,000 for taking over as the interim offensive coordinator. Ensminger will be paid a daily rate of $833 if he remains the offensive coordinator beyond December 15th. Dellenger also adds that interim defensive line coach Pete Jenkins is making $25,000 a month and interim outside linebackers coach Dennis Johnson is receiving $15,000 a month.
Mixing Coverage and Pressure to Defend Empty: In years past, offenses would align in empty formations for two main reasons: to accentuate the talents of an athletic quarterback or to pick apart defenses that are forced into playing vanilla coverage structures. But these days it becomes necessary to defend both of these components by knowing when to play coverage and when to send pressure. West Texas A&M (D-II): Source tells FootballScoop, Sioux Falls (D-II – SD) defensive coordinator Tremaine Jackson will be the new head coach at West Texas. Jackson also previously served as defensive coordinator at Texas Southern.
Houston: ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reports that Kiffin, Major Applewhite and Todd Orlando are now the three finalists (Les Miles & Lincoln Riley had been in it). McMurphy reports Houston officials are meeting tonight.
Houston: Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin will be the new head coach at Houston, per a report from Dan Wolken, who adds that school president Renu Khator is the only person needed for the final OK. However, a number of others, including Joseph Duarte who covers UH for the Chronicle, are reporting that no offer has been extended and no decision has been made. Houston AD Hunter Yurachek tweeted grey smoke, indicating no decision yet.
Nevada: Last night we shared the news that Nevada is hiring Jay Norvell as their new head coach.
Georgia Southern: Offensive line coach Allen Mogridge has resigned we can confirm. Multiple local reports had this last night we are told.
Lane College (D-II – TN): Lane College is looking for a guarantee game on September 16th 2017, preferably an FCS opponent. If interested contact head coach / director of athletics Derrick Burroughs at 731-421-7461.
