Ohio State awards strength coach Mickey Marotti new contract, raise (Mickey Marotti)

Mickey Marotti is essentially an institution unto himself as Ohio State's strength coach, and that institution isn't going anywhere any time soon.

The Buckeyes have awarded Marotti a 3-year contract that will pay him a highly specific salary of $862,238 in 2023, according to documents obtained by the Columbus Dispatch. The new contract was agreed upon Monday, according to the documents.

Marotti earned $821,179 in salary and $174,501 in bonuses in 2022, a season that saw Ohio State fail to defeat Michigan and win the Big Ten but still reach the College Football Playoff, where the Buckeyes pushed eventual national champion Georgia to the brink.

The new contract represents a 5 percent raise, and includes provisions for more annual raises.

The deal maintains Marotti's status as the second highest-paid strength coach in college football, based on publicly available data. Oklahoma State's Rob Glass leads the profession $1 million per year, and Florida's Mark Hocke is third at $750,000.

Marotti, whose official title is assistant AD for football sports performance, and associate AD for player personnel/general manager Mark Pantoni came to Ohio State with Urban Meyer in 2012 and have remained in place under Ryan Day.

In 11 seasons with Marotti handling strength and Pantoni managing the roster, Ohio State is 128-15 with one national title, five College Football Playoff appearances, five Big Ten championships, two Rose Bowl victories, 10 AP-top 10 finishes and an 8-2 record versus Michigan.
