Sources: Air Force makes key off-field hire (Joe Caulfield Football)

Air Force has hired Joe Caulfield as its director of football operations, sources told FootballScoop on Monday.

Caulfield comes to Colorado Springs from North Dakota, where he was the Fighting Hawks' director of player personnel and front office operations. There, he directed much of UND's off-field efforts, from on-campus recruiting, to camps, to football operations, to video coordination, to NFL relations, while also managing the roster. He served in that role for the 2022 and '23 seasons.

Prior to that, Caulfield was a quality control assistant with Lafayette College, where he assisted in recruiting, practice management, and game day charting and communication.

All the while, Caulfield also worked as an advanced scouting team analyst and special teams analyst for Pro Football Focus for the past seven seasons, according to his LinkedIn. Caulfield charted NFL and NCAA games and provided stats to Cris Collinsworth for use in NBC's Sunday Night Football telecasts.

Caulfield's sporting career started in lacrosse. A dual American-Irish citizen, he spent seven years as a player and coach with the Irish national lacrosse team, where Caulfield earned 37 "caps" while playing in tournaments across Europe and in Canada from 2004-11.

He switched to football as an assistant with Princeton's sprint football team in 2015, then coached at a Philadelphia high school for four seasons before landing an internship with the Washington Commanders to help enforce COVID-19 policies in 2020. He then joined Lafayette's staff in 2021.

Air Force opens its 2024 season against Merrimack College Aug. 31 in Colorado Springs.
