Washburn has fired longtime head coach Craig Schurig, the school announced Monday.
Schurig headed the Ichabods for 23 seasons.
"We are grateful to Coach Schurig and his family for their long-time commitment to this university," Washburn’s athletic director, Loren Ferre, said in a statement. "He has built a solid program at Washburn, recruiting talented players and coaches during his two decades here. His commitment to excellence has laid a foundation for the future, and we appreciate all that Craig has done to advance our program, both on and off the field.”
A Division II school located in Topeka, Kan., Washburn competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
The Ichabods completed a 3-8 season with a 35-28 win at Northeastern (Okla.) State on Saturday. Washburn went 2-9 in 2023.
Schurig led the 'Bods to four Division II playoff trips, one MIAA title, and four runner-up finishes in conference play, the last of which occurred in 2021. He leaves as the school's all-time record holder with 142 career victories.
Associate head coach Zach Watkins takes over as interim head coach, though the school's announcement notes “long-term plans for the head coaching position are still being determined."
