The night before Super Bowl 49, Bill Belichick gathered his staff for a final hour long meeting at their hotel before the big game. In that meeting, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels jotted down seven words, inspired by Belichick's message, that helped shape the outcome of the Super Bowl.
McDaniels told Peter King in his Monday Morning Quarterback column that Belichick's message to the staff was one of empowerment, explaining that "this game is no different than any other one. It’s a 60-minute football game, and whatever issues we have, let’s make sure we correct them, coach them, and fix them. That’s our job."
In short, McDaniels chose to write down a seven word summary of that final message on the top of his play call sheet so he'd constantly be reminded of them during the ups and downs of the game.
The seven words he chose to write in blue Sharpie were: "Adjust" and "Correct problems and get them fixed".
As King explained, it was Belichick's message before the game that empowered his assistants to adjust when needed. That, and some help from a blue Sharpie, helped New England bring home their fourth Super Bowl since 2000.
