Lance Leipold's impressive rebuild at Kansas marches on this fall with some new coordinators in place and some additional staff changes, and sources share the veteran program builder is set to add one of the state's top junior college coaches to his staff as well.
Sources tell FootballScoop Butler CC (JC - KS) head coach Bruce Vignery is stepping down from his role after 17 seasons with the program as a player or coach to join Leipold's staff.
2025 would have marked Vignery's fourth season leading the program.
In the last three seasons, he led the Grizzlies to finishes of 8-4 (2022), 5-5 (2023) and 7-4 (2024) in the ultra-competitive Kansas Junior College ranks.
Seven of their 11 games last year took place against top 15 ranked programs, taking on the top ranked team in Junior College football on back-to-back weeks. That stretch saw them beat Hutchinson CC 27-22 one week before losing to a top ranked Iowa Western program the next week 48-7.
Vignery's first season as head coach included wins over three top 15 ranked programs, plus a win against a 12th ranked Kilgore College in the Heart of Texas Bowl, which marked the first bowl game victory for the program in several seasons.
As a player and assistant, Vignery has been part of well over 120 wins by the program, with six conference titles and a national title for the Grizzlies in 2007.
At Kansas, he joins a program that slipped from 9-4 in 2023 to 5-7 last year. That finish marked Leipold's worst season in Lawrence since taking over one of the most extensive rebuild jobs in college football back in 2021, when they finished that year 2-10.
Leipold and the Jayhawks enter this fall with a 22-28 record since 2021 with two bowl trips in four seasons.
