Kent State head coach Kenni Burns reportedly placed on leave

Kent State head coach Kenni Burns has reportedly been placed on administrative leave.

ESPN's Pete Thamel was first to share the news.

Sources tell FootballScoop the decision comes after a lengthy investigation into the Golden Flashes head coach who just wrapped up his second season at the helm.

The program was just days away from their kickoff of spring practices.

Kent State has finished 1-11 and 0-12 in two seasons under Burns, who previously served as a top assistant for PJ Fleck at Minnesota and Western Michigan, helping to elevate both programs to new heights, in addition to stops at Wyoming and North Dakota State as well.

Despite the 1-11 record after his first season, VP and director of athletics Randale L. Richmond rewarded Burns with a one-year contract extension back in February of last year taking him through the 2028 season.

Back in the fall a story also surfaced that Burns was being taken to court over $24,000 in credit card debt.

The Golden Flashes finished ranked last nationally in both scoring offense and scoring defense at the conclusion of their winless season, which marked the first time an FBS program finished the year winless since 2019.

In the event he doesn't return to lead the program, Kent State would join Stanford as the second program to make a head coaching change during spring ball, pushing the total number of FBS head coaching changes to 30 this cycle.
