For those that don't follow the spring football leagues (and judging from the attendance and TV figures floating around that's a whole lot of us) the UFL kicked off their first games this weekend with four contests, starting with a game Friday and Saturday before two games on Sunday.
The final game Sunday pitted the defending champion Birmingham Stallions, led by Skip Holtz who has led his organization to their respective league title in the past three straight spring seasons, against the DC Defenders, who are being led by interim head coach Shannon Harris following the sudden departure of Reggie Barlow to take the head coaching job at Tennessee State (FCS) last week.
In what can only be described as a stunning opening weekend upset, Harris led the Defenders to a win over Holtz and the Stallions.
The day started with DC stuffing a fourth-down try by Birmingham on the opening possession, and DC marched down the field go drill a field goal to take a 3-0 lead. While the Stallions were able to capture some momentum on both sides of the ball late in the first half, DC scored a touchdown with less than 10 seconds remaining in the first half to take the lead into the break.
Behind a defense that provided unrelenting pressure all night to the tune of eight sacks, Harris and his DC squad held on for the 18-11 win to start the season with an important victory.
After the game, Harris was very complimentary of the team Holtz has built over the years, and shared in his postgame presser that this victory was especially personal.
Down on the field, moments before standing in front of that microphone for postgame comments, a dramatic moment unfolded at the end of the game where cameras captured the customary postgame handshake between Harris and Holtz where things got a bit tense.
It's safe to say the interaction between the two shed some light onto why Harris felt the game was persona.
After telling Holtz "Good game coach," Harris can be heard telling his adversary "You thought I was a doorman at headquarters."
Holtz disputed that while tugging on the shirt of Harris before DC's coach eventually pulls away.
See that moment in the clip.
Gotta love the #UFL lmaooo. Imagine if an NFL coach yelled "get off my f***ing field!" after a Week 1 win.#Defenders HC Shannon Harris did just that....then aggressively dabbed up Skip Holtz and yelled about Holtz having "called him a doorman"(???)
