AppState making bold hire for Chief of Staff, Pass Game Specialist (Featured)

Kevin Higgins has nearly a half-century in coaching football.

Partnering with a first-time, FBS head coach, Higgins just might reach that 50-year mark.

Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that first-year Appalachian State coach Dowell Loggains is tabbing Higgins to become the chief of staff and passing game specialist for the Mountaineers.

It's a move that lends instant experience to Loggains's first-year AppState staff, as Higgins boasts extensive experience at the Power Conference and NFL levels.

For nearly a decade, Higgins served at the right hand of record-setting former Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson; additionally, he owns NFL experience from time with the Detroit Lions.

Higgins, a former head coach with FCS Playoffs experience from a decorated run atop Lehigh, also has rich ties to the Carolinas from both his work for Clawson at Wake Forest from 2014-22 as well as an enduring run as head coach at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., from 2015-13.

A former Arkansas quarterback, Loggains is in his first year as AppState head coach following time running the offense at South Carolina and also being on staff in the SEC at his alma mater prior to that run with Shane Beamer.

Additionally, Loggains has NFL bona fides from his time on Mike Vrabel's Tennessee Titans staff.

AppState is scheduled to open its 2025 season Friday, Aug. 29, against regional rival Charlotte in Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL's Panthers. The Mountaineers also have a compelling tilt in late September against Boise State, a 2024 College Football Playoff participant.
