Infamous NFL defensive coordinator begins college coaching gig (Featured)

Gregg Williams climbed just about every rung on the NFL ladder across three decades coaching on football's biggest stage.

But he remains perhaps most known for his alleged role in the infamous 'BountyGate' scandal during his time running the defensive unit for the New Orleans Saints, the franchise with which Williams won his lone Super Bowl crown.

Williams now has embarked on his latest challenge -- and ahead of the expected timeframe, sources told FootballScoop on Wednesday.

Though he was previously announced as having agreed to become Reggie Barlow's first defensive coordinator after Barlow took over for former NFL great Eddie George, sources told FootballScoop that Williams already has departed his UFL role and reported to work this week in Nashville.

When hired late last month at Tennessee State, Barlow initially had said that Williams would join the TSU Tigers program at the conclusion of the UFL's spring season.

Per sources, "(Williams) informed the team (D.C. Defenders) and the League two days ago and is in Nashville."

Williams received additional chances in the NFL after the penalties from the 'BountyGate,' and he even had a successful -- 5-3 across a half-season -- run as interim head coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2018.

Williams, however, has been out of the NFL since he was fired by the New York Jets in December 2020. He was out of coaching for about three years and then returned to the UFL's D.C. Defenders.
