SMU's Rhett Lashlee addresses speculation linking him to Arkansas opening (Arkansas)

After deciding it was time to part ways with Sam Pittman, Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek admitted that Pittman wasn't given the necessary resources required for one of the most beloved coaches by a fan base to compete in the rugged SEC.

So where does Arkansas go from here? Well, Bobby Petrino has taken the reigns and made some significant changes to the defensive staff as he makes a case for a second tour leading the Razorbacks, but it was another coach the fanbase is very familiar with that got mentioned almost immediately.

SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee is a product of Arkansas. He played quarterback for Gus Malzahn at Shiloh Christian, going 40-3-2 as a starter with trips to three-straight state title games and two state titles to his name, setting all kinds of state records and gaining national attentional along the way.

He took his talents to Fayetteville, where he served as a backup to Matt Jones before a injury to his shoulder ended his playing career. Lashlee would spend a few seasons back at Shiloh Christian coaching the quarterbacks before landing a graduate assistant job at Arkansas and then Auburn before embarking on a college coaching journey that saw him continue to work under mentor his mentor in Malzahn at multiple stops including Arkansas State and Auburn before blazing his own path at UConn as a play caller, and then SMU and Miami before returning to SMU as the head coach in 2022.

After leading SMU to not only the ACC title game in their first year as a member, but also punching their ticket to the College Football Playoff, Lashlee's name being mentioned for an SEC job in his home state was a forgone conclusion.

Today, he was asked about the speculation linking him to the Razorbacks opening, and while much of it included the type of coach-speak we all come to expect coaches to confront rumors with while leading a team in-season, there were a few things he shared worth noting.

"I don't really stand anywhere on speculation and hypotheticals," Lashlee, who has SMU at 2-2 heading into this weekend, opened his response by sharing.

"I haven't given it any thought because there hasn't been anything to give thought to. I am really excited about what we are building here."

"I am not discouraged at all by the fact that we are sitting here at 2-2. I think what we have begun to build is really fun, and what we can build is even more special."

Lashlee goes on to note the recruiting success they had with last year's class, and they have another top-ranked class coming in 2026.

"Until there are things to talk about, we don't talk about it. Internally, we haven't talked about it because in my world nothing is going on. Among the outside world, there is a lot of speculation, and that's part of our business, and it's probably not going anywhere."
