Brent Key addresses coaching speculation: "Slice me open and see what colors I bleed." (Featured)

Georgia Tech's Brent Key and Indiana's Curt Cignetti both share a common thread.

First the obvious, in both are leading ranked teams with College Football Playoff aspirations. Key has the Yellow Jackets an impressive 8-1 and ranked 17th in the inaugural CFP rankings of 2025, while Cignetti has the Hoosiers undefeated and ranked in the number two spot.

There's more though.

Both Key and Cignetti bet on themselves when they left the staff at Alabama, and both have had those bets pay off in major ways.

We all know by now that Cignetti's bet took him to IUP, a Division II program back near his roots where his dad had a rich history, but for Key it involved leaving Nick Saban's staff a year after helping them to the 2017 National Title for an opportunity to become the offensive line coach at his alma mater at Georgia Tech.

After hiring Geoff Collins as head coach, Georgia Tech was taking a departure from the option approach utilized by Paul Johnson, and one of Collins' first hires was to bring Key in to lead the change on the offensive line. When Collins was dismissed after a 1-3 start with eight games left in the 2022 season, Key got the opportunity to become the interim head coach. He stepped in an made an immediate impact, upsetting a top 25 Pitt squad, then beating Duke before leading the team to road wins at Virginia Tech and at #13 North Carolina to end the season.

Decision makers decided to hand the keys of the program to the man who clearly had a deep love for the roster and campus community, and after going 7-6 in back-to-back seasons in 2023 and 2024, that trust has payed off in a big way this season with Key and the Yellow Jackets one of the frontrunners to earn a spot to represent the ACC in the CFP.

With that success, has come interest from other programs who admire the way Key has built the Georgia Tech program in his image, with toughness and discipline leading the way.

Taking the opportunity to address the speculation linking him to jobs away from his alma mater, Key provided an early leader for one of the quotes of the coaching cycle.

"Since I came back here, since I was named the head coach here, outside of the time with my family, every waking second of my life, has gone towards building this program, to get to the point that it is right now. So that, in turn, we can continue three years from now, five years from now, 10 years from now, continue to elevate this place to be in that conversation."

"Not to be in there for two or three weeks, but to be a consistent team, not when you lose one game, have people say the story book is over. Nah. it's just the beginning."

"Slice me open and see what colors I bleed."

That's a damn strong statement that Georgia Tech fans are going to love, and hang on tight to.

Key will lead his guys against a 1-8 Boston College squad on the road this week, before home matchups with Pitt and their in-state rivalry game with Georgia to end the season.
