UAB players recovering after being stabbed in team's football center (UAB)

Two UAB players were injured and transported to a nearby Birmingham hospital in a stabbing early Saturday morning on the UAB campus in downtown Birmingham, Alabama.

UAB has recently issued a formal statement from its athletics department, acknowledging and updating the situation.

"UAB Police and Public Safety is investigating an assault that took place this morning at the Football Operations Center," the UAB Athletics Department said in its statement. "Injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. The suspect is in custody, and there is no threat to campus."

Birmingham has a renowned medical complex and multiple hospitals are within mere miles of the UAB campus.

The AL.com website reported that emergency responder broadcasts on public radio from both Birmingham area police and fire personnel revealed that two of the injured stabbing victims are Blazers football players.

UPDATE:

Sources familiar with the tragic situation indicated to FootballScoop this afternoon that the two injured players were expected to make full recoveries from their injuries, one of which was to a player's hand after he tried to intervene in the knife attack and the other was the attacked player who suffered a body wound.

UAB officials were expected to give players who were struggling to cope with the attack the option of sitting out today's game while also working to ensure grief counselors were available to provide resources and counseling following the conclusion of the game for any players wishing to speak with professionals about the attack.

Per sources, an argument between two teammates escalated inside the team's football headquarters and turned violent when a player pulled out a knife and attacked his teammate.

UAB is scheduled to host is final home game of the 2025 season at 3 p.m. ET against South Florida. The Blazers, who earlier this season fired head coach Trent Dilfer and have been operating under interim coach Alex Mortensen, conclude their 2025 season next week at Tulsa.

Blazers officials are deep into their search for Dilfer's replacement after Dilfer was relieved of his coaching duties Oct. 12, the day after a 53-33 blowout-loss at Florida Atlantic.
