A 2-10 season in Year 2 means there will not be a Year 3 for Trenton Boykin atop HBCU program Hampton.
The Pirates parted ways with Boykin after closing out their campaign Saturday in a 38-10 loss to Rhode Island. The school announced the move.
That defeat ensured that Hampton would go winless in Coastal Athletic Association competition at 0-8.
Boykin guided the Pirates to a competitive 5-7 campaign in 2024, his first as head coach following five years as an assistant coach in the Hampton program.
But Boykin particularly struggled in CAA play; his Pirates posted just a 2-14 mark in conference action the past two seasons.
This year, in particular, saw Hampton struggle to be competitive on a week-in, week-out basis. The Pirates lost nine of their 10 games by 14 or more points.
In their season-ending six-game losing streak, the Pirates had a 29-points-per-game margin of defeat.
An early name to watch in Hampton's search for Boykin's replacement is Maryland assistant coach Latrell Scott. A former standout tight end at Hampton, Scott has coached in the ACC, the SEC and also previously served as head coach at both Virginia State and Norfolk State. He's a Richmond, Virginia, native with deep ties to the region.
