Sources: Marshall football hiring new general manager (Marshall)

Marshall football is snagging a Jones from Arkansas State -- an Alex Jones at that.

But this Jones is of no relation to Arkansas State head coach Butch Jones, nor Red Wolves tight ends coach Alex Jones -- son of the head coach.

This Alex Jones has served as Arkansas State's director of player personnel for the past year, but he's now heading into a new role.

Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Alex Jones is becoming the new general manager for Tony Gibson's Marshall Thunder Herd football program.

He's set to replace Quint Cottingham, who followed Gibson from their time together at North Carolina State but has elected to exit college football and focus on the private sector, sources shared with FootballScoop.

Prior to his arrival in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Alex Jones had previously worked at Virginia Tech in a top personnel role for two seasons under ex-Hokies head coach Brent Pry.

While he's been titled as Arkansas State's DPP, sources indicated Jones handled much more a general manager-type of role for the Red Wolves.

Arkansas State rallied to win at Appalachian State to cap the regular season, a win that gave Butch Jones's program a third consecutive season of bowl eligibility. After a 1-4 start to the season, the Red Wolves are poised this weekend to become college football's only team this season to overcome such a rough opening and rally to earn bowl eligibility.

Marshall just missed bowl eligibility in its first season under the guidance of Gibson, who garnered national acclaim for his extended work as Dave Doeren's defensive coordinator at NC State prior to becoming a first-time FBS head coach.

The Herd fell, 24-19, last week in their season-finale against Georgia Southern to close Year 1 at 5-7.

Marshall is scheduled to open its 2026 season on the road at Penn State, which will feature a new head coach after the Nittany Lions and athletics director Pat Kraft fired James Franklin midseason and then conducted a coaching search that has pushed on for nearly 60 days.
