Matt Wilson -- 2025 FootballScoop General Manager of the Year (Indiana)

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Matt Wilson (Indiana) is inaugural winner of the FootballScoop General Manager of the Year award, presented by Teamworks.

ACC. SEC. And, again, the Big Ten Conference. NFL, too.

“Anyone who knows Matt Wilson knows what has happened in Bloomington (Indiana) the last two seasons is no fluke," Will Redmond, most recently the decorated Auburn general manager and a former FootballScoop honoree, said. "Matt has the distinct ability to take a head coach’s vision for a roster, both culturally and athletically, and bring that vision to life. He has done this at every stop along his journey. More impressive than his ability to evaluate players is his ability to evaluate people. Matt’s personnel 'tree' is illustrious and impressive and is filled with some of the best young professionals in our industry.

"You would be hard-pressed to find a better person and personnel man in college football.”

Matt Wilson isn't old by any means. He's just been watching film -- tape, actually -- for decades already after starting, by recent estimates, around age 4 or 5 with his grandfather, Rip Scherer Sr.

Indiana University's assistant athletics director for player personnel -- Curt Cignetti's closest element to a collegiate general manager -- Wilson officially got his start at the University of Memphis under Rip Scherer Jr., son of the former Penn State running back and, like Wilson's grandfather, an early mentor in the developmental stages of his career.

But Wilson was working in the equipment room; college personnel departments at that time nearly 15 years ago still were in their nascent stages.

So there was a career hiatus. Then, suddenly, Wilson was finishing up his degree in the desert at Arizona State -- and finding a spot in the NFL.

He was named an scouting assistant for the Arizona Cardinals -- in part because Rip Scherer Jr. called Arizona's Director of Scouting, TJ McCreight while the latter was on a family vacation, as the story goes.

Since that time, Wilson has worked for Paul Pasqualoni at UConn, for both then-head coach Butch Jones and elite personnel guru Bob Welton at the University of Tennessee; added his first stint at Indiana for Tom Allen, joined Joe Moorhead at Mississippi State, reunited with Jones in Jonesboro, Arkansas, at Arkansas State and also briefly ran the personnel show at Dave Doeren's North Carolina State program.

Along the way, he's leaned on Kevin Colbert -- the former Pittsburgh Steelers general manager and also a cousin to the family.

Thus far, there has been no national championships. Indiana is the No. 1 overall seed in the just-beginning 2025 College Football Playoff.

As Wilson said this week, "Like Coach Cig says, 'Job's not finished. Never satisfied.'"

Never. Even as his peers crown him FootballScoop's first-ever General Manager of the Year as presented by Teamworks.
