Tony Sanchez is set to promote a young coaching veteran to take over at tight ends coach for his New Mexico State program.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Taylor Mazzone is being promoted from his role as an offensive analyst with the program to the on-field role coaching the tight ends.
Mazzone, a 2019 selection to the AFCA 35 Under 35 program, has over a decade and a half of experience at the Division I level including a bunch of experience at Power Four programs.
Working alongside his father, veteran college offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone, Taylor has worked at Arizona, Texas A&M, Arizona State, and UCLA.
Prior to joining Sanchez in Las Cruces, Mazzone spent a season as the offensive coordinator at Idaho State, where he also mentored the quarterbacks on Charlie Ragle's staff. He also logged a season as the receivers coach at San Diego (FCS - CA), where he helped the Toreros win a share of the 2020 Pioneer League title.
His on-field stops in major college football include serving as the outside receivers coach at Arizona for three seasons (2018-20), and also a stint as the quarterbacks coach at UCLA, where he was promoted to the role in January of 2013 after a season as a graduate assistant working with the Bruins special teams.
At New Mexico, he is set to replace Nelson Fishback who is heading east to join Ryan Beard's staff at Coastal Carolina. Fishback, who also held the special teams coordinator role on Sanchez's staff, will coordinate the special teams and serve as assistant quarterbacks coach, according to multiple reports recently.
