Sources: Oklahoma expected to hire Jason Witten for tight ends job (jason witten)

Former Tennessee and Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is expected to take the tight ends job at Oklahoma, sources told FootballScoop on Thursday.

A 17-year pro with the Cowboys and (briefly) the Las Vegas Raiders, Witten has been the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas, since 2021.

After a 2-8 start, Witten went 44-7 over the past four seasons, with state championships in 2023 and '24. Witten's sons have played a crucial part of his coaching success -- CJ is now a linebacker at Rice, and Cooper is viewed as one of the top linebackers in the class of 2027 (and Oklahoma is a strong contender for his services).

Witten, of course, is best known for his decade-and-a-half run with the Cowboys, where he was a 2-time First Team All-Pro and an 11-time Pro Bowler. He was named the NFL's Man of the Year in 2012 and entered the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2019, and late last month was named among 15 finalists for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class in his first year of eligibility. A third-round pick in the 2003 draft, Witten is the Cowboys' all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and games played, and is tied for the franchise record in Pro Bowl appearances.

Oklahoma, fresh off a College Football Playoff season, is looking to upgrade its tight end room after playing converted linebacker Jaren Kanak in that position this season. Kanak is now out of eligibility, and backups Carson Kent and Kaden Helms have entered the transfer portal. Joe Jon Finley, a former Sooner tight end and coach at the position since 2021, was relieved of duties on Jan. 1.
