Oklahoma is expected to hire former Michigan passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan to coach its cornerbacks, according to The Oklahoma Breakdown, a podcast hosted by former Sooners Gabe Ikard and Teddy Lehman.
Morgan will replace Jay Valai, who took a role earlier this month with the Buffalo Bills. He'll work alongside Brandon Hall, who returns for his fourth season as safeties coach.
Sooners head coach Brent Venables saw Morgan's handiwork up close and personal last September, when Oklahoma hosted Michigan. Sooners quarterback John Mateer was 21-of-34 for 270 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 24-13 Oklahoma victory.
For the year, Michigan finished 45th nationally in pass efficiency defense, snaring 13 interceptions to 17 passing touchdowns across 13 games. Oklahoma was 22nd in that metric, but the Sooners nabbed only nine interceptions across their 13 contests.
Morgan spent two seasons at Michigan and was not retained by new head Wolverine Kyle Whittingham. Morgan and the Sooners will see Michigan again in Ann Arbor on Sept. 12.
Prior to Ann Arbor, Morgan was the defensive coordinator for two seasons at Louisiana, his alma mater. His 2023 unit was among the top 35 nationally in yards per play allowed.
A member of the AFCA's 35 Under 35, Morgan previously coached defensive backs at Vanderbilt, Louisiana, Houston, ULM and Western Carolina after a GA stint at Vanderbilt from 2012-13.
