Sources: Notre Dame adding defensive staffer (Featured)

With spring football practice set to open in late March, Notre Dame is on the verge of completing its full coaching staff in fifth-year coach Marcus Freeman's Fighting Irish program.

In addition to being expected to hang onto third-year strength coach Loren Landow, whom multiple sources told FootballScoop had received intense interest from NFL teams, Notre Dame is adding a former standout-player from the Atlantic Coast Conference to its defensive staff, FootballScoop has learned.

The Irish are adding ex-Wake Forest linebacker Chase Jones to the defensive side of the ball, sources tell FootballScoop on Saturday.

Jones is expected to fill the vacancy created in December when Jevaughn Codlin departed his defensive analyst role to reunite with new North Texas head coach Neal Brown as the Mean Green's safeties coach.

In Jones, Notre Dame is poised to add a former two-time Wake Forest team captain who was a three-year letterwinner for the Demon Deacons and earned All-ACC Academic honors during his career in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Additionally, sources confirmed to FootballScoop that Notre Dame is adding Shaun Shivers, a former collegiate running back, to the offensive staff in an analyst role. Dominic Spalding departed the Notre Dame staff earlier this year to become the assistant wide receivers coach at Michigan State. News of Shiver's impending addition to the Irish staff was first reported by On3's Mike Singer and confirmed to FootballScoop.

While the Irish offensive staff has remained almost unchanged on the heels of Notre Dame's 10-2 2025 season that resulted in the program being the first team left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff, Notre Dame has experienced significant turnover on the defensive side of the ball -- though Chris Ash is back for his second season as defensive coordinator.

Former Irish linebackers coach Max Bullough exited to coach at his alma mater, Michigan State, while within the past month both Mike Mickens and Al Washington departed for NFL jobs.

Mickens, who had been Notre Dame's longest-tenured coach on the football staff, arriving in South Bend, Indiana, even prior to Freeman, accepted a role coaching in the secondary of the Baltimore Ravens.

Washington, among Freeman's first hires after he was promoted to head coach in December 2021, was elevated by Notre Dame earlier this year as the Irish's linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator but recently departed for the linebackers job with the NFL's Miami Dolphins.

There, Washington reunites with new Miami head coach Jeff Hafley, with whom Washington previously worked at Ohio State, as well as new Dolphins defensive coordinator Sean Duggan -- whom Washington previously helped coach at Boston College, where both Washington and Duggan played in their collegiate careers.

Notre Dame is expected to open spring camp on March 20 and is tentatively set to host its annual NFL Pro Day workout on March 24.

The Fighting Irish will conclude spring camp April 25 with the annual Blue & Gold Game inside Notre Dame Stadium.
