There's a reason our own Zach Barnett dubbed Collin County, Texas the high school football stadium capital of the world.
Over a decade ago, back in 2009, Allen HS (TX) captured headlines nationally with their $60 million stadium, and Collin County is also home to McKinney ISD ($70 million stadium and home site of the Division II National Title Game) and the Ford Center Indoor Facility ($90 million).
More recently, Melissa HS (TX), a rapidly growing district in the county with a current high school population of just over 1,300 kids, built an impressive $35 million stadium.
Now another Texas high school football program located within those same county borders is looking build a stadium with an even higher price tag.
Prosper ISD has announced a new proposal for a $94 million stadium.
This would be a second stadium in a fast growing district that already has one, which cost a reported $53 million at the time of its construction.
The new stadium being proposed at Prosper would be an 8,000 seat venue, and is part of a $2.8 billion bond package.
How fast is the Prosper area growing? The district's bond website shares that when this current senior class was entering kindergarten the entire district had 3,000 students.
They've added 25,000 in the years since.
Prosper continues growing by a few thousands students each year and is slated to open Walnut Grove high school next fall., and an article from the Celina Record back in January of 2022 shares that, within the next decade, the district is expecting to have to add THREE more high schools, 5-6 middle schools, and 14-15 more elementary schools.
$2.8 billion (or really any number beginning a 'b') is monumental bond for any school district, yet Prosper says that residents will not see a tax rate increase of any kind.
With the proposal in its infancy, no renderings of it were immediately available, but we will most definitely be on the lookout for them as soon as they become public.
