Despite numerous reports earlier this week that Bill Belichick and the Patriots would part ways at the end of the season, the majority of the most well respected voices in the national media stayed quiet on the matter.
Tonight, Ian Rapoport broke that silence with a bit of an update on Belichick's future in New England.
Rap shared in an article tonight that fate of Belichick "has not yet been decided," adding that the expectation is that a decision is expected in the next month, but it could also take longer.
The Patriots have four games remaining with their season finale set for January 7th.
With no firm decision made by owner Robert Kraft, Rap shares that the results of the remaining games against the Chiefs, Broncos, Bills and Jets and how they finish the season could weigh heavily on the decision.
A strong performance against that slate could mean a likely return, while a performance like the Chargers put together against the Raiders earlier this week (down 42-0 at the half) with Brandon Staley on the hot seat could lead to changes.
Rap ends his piece noting "either way, expect a period of evaluation when the regular season ends, with no immediate conclusion on Belichick coming."
The Patriots are 3-10 on the year, hoping to keep momentum on their side coming off a 21-18 win over the Steelers last week.
