At the time, Ed Orgeron's hire of New Orleans Saints offensive assistant Joe Brady as the new LSU passing game coordinator heading into the 2019 season was seen as a bit of an unconventional risk.
Knowing what we know now, it was one of the best coordinator hires any college football team has made, as Brady helped lead one of college football's most explosive and efficient offenses as LSU shredded teams to a national title and a Heisman Trophy for top NFL Draft pick Joe Burrow.
Entering the 2021 offseason with key hires to make on both sides of the ball, with offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger moving to an off-field role and the program parting ways with passing game coordinator Scott Linehan at the end of the season, the LSU offense is again front and center in need of a play-caller.
Now, Orgeron and LSU are hoping to catch a bit of that magic once again with their new offensive coordinator.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Carolina Panthers quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz is a strong candidate to land the offensive play calling job on Orgeron's staff.
This morning Pete Thamel first shared that Peetz was expected to interview for the position.
Peetz coached the quarterbacks for Joe Brady this past season in Carolina, and prior to that coached star Christian McCaffrey as the team's running backs coach.
Although Peetz spent two seasons (2013 & 2018) at Alabama as an analyst, most of his career Peetz has been in the NFL. He has worked with the Raiders for 3 seasons, Carolina for two, the Redskins and Jaguars for one each. The question is, does Peetz want to coordinate at the college level?
The belief in the profession is that there is a good shot that Peetz brings Panthers offensive assistant DJ Mangas with him as well. Prior to joining Matt Rhule in Carolina, Mangas served as an analyst on the LSU staff during their national title season.
Orgeron is expected to make his evaluation; and perhaps his pitch in the next 24 hours...
