Another head high school coach has resigned after administration bans off season workouts (California)

Nearly every high school football program in the country has been doing their off season workouts for at least the past month or so.

Contreras HS (CA) is one of few schools that has not been doing that, and the administration's stance on the matter has led to the resignation of the head coach and entire staff.

Head coach Manuel Guevara recently resigned from his post as the head coach at Contreras HS after he was told by school administration that he would not be allowed to hold any off season workouts with his players.

In fact, Guevara told the LA Times that they aren't allowed to have any contact with players until summer rolls around.

Guevara, who has been a part of the school system the past 16 years and the head coach for two seasons, shared with the Times that he typically likes to start the off season training process in January, but was told by administrators that they didn't want off season workouts to impact participation in other sports.

Last Thursday, the LA Unified school district released the following statement:

β€œThe decision to limit offseason workouts for football players at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex is unique. It aims to give students the opportunity to participate in multiple sports throughout the year without the pressure of dedicating all their time to one single team. This limitation applies to all sports and all schools on this campus and was unanimously decided by principals after receiving feedback from students and coaches.”

For those wondering, Contreras HS has an enrollment of about 400 students.

If this storyline sounds familiar, it's because its the second time in three months a high school coach has resigned with off season workouts front and center as the reasoning.
