A great lesson for coaches looking to earn respect of players

While this is a great clip of Washington State outside receivers coach Dennis Simmons coaching his guys up (and we love a quality mic'd up session), it's the last 30 seconds of the video that really caught our attention.

Simmons talks about what it means to coach and learn under a guy like Mike Leach, and he understand that coaching is a constant process of growth.

"As a guy who's growing in this profession, I learn things from him everyday. He wears the head coach title, and he wears the offensive coordinator title and he's out there everyday."

Then they show Simmons doing up-downs with his receiver group (which isn't something you see a lot of major college coaches doing) and he provides an explanation in the form of some advice for coaches who are willing to listen.

"From a players standpoint, when I played back in the day, I always found that I had a greater respect for my position coach if he was out there doing it with me. It wasn't like he just said 'Hey, you guys need to move faster or you guys need to do this,' he was out there doing it with us and he's in it just as deep as you are."

That is some excellent advice for coaches (both young and old) that are out there trying to earn the respect of their position group.
