Barry Alvarez may be one of the most influential athletic directors in the country.
Alvarez has played a role in his former assistants getting head coaching opportunities. For us, names that come to mind are former Raider and Nebraska head coach Bil Callahan, former Vikings head coach Brad Childress, Pitt head coach Paul Chryst. and of course Bret Bielema.
Alvarez's latest protege to be moving on is reportedly Miami athletic director Shawn Eichorst. Eichorst, who is a Wisconsin-Whitewater grad and former defensive back, resigned as the Hurricanes athletic director this morning and has officially been named the new athletic director at Nebraska, where Alvarez played linebacker in the 60's.
Eichorst served as the deputy athletic director under Alvarez from 2009 up until April of 2011 when he took the AD job with the Hurricanes.
