Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones didn’t seem too pleased overall with the Bearcats’ scrimmage on Wednesday. The Bearcats went about 80 plays in their first true scrimmage.
Jones stated, “We got a long way to go. By no stretch of the imagination are we game-ready yet. We gotta be a much better tackling football team. We had way too many missed tackles.”
“I thought we ran the ball a little bit more than we’ve been doing. We want to be able to run the football and it all stems up front, it stems from our wide outs blocking on the perimeter, and our backs understanding the tempo of running plays.”
“I think the overall physicality, the tackling, the ability to run the football on a consistent basis…no negative yardage football plays. We had way too many penalties.”
“We did a stat last year, 92% of our touchdowns we gave up on defense were either aided by a defensive penalty or a big-play given up. We’ve got to make a team drive the ball to beat us. “
Cincinnati opens on the road at Fresno State.
