When you think of the dominant USC defenses of the past, you likely think of big, physical defensive lineman, rock solid linebackers that rank among the best in the country, and safeties built like linebackers that run like the wind.
In order to take advantage of what the current roster has available, newly hired defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast has made his intentions clear they'll be an aggressive, attacking 5-2/3-4 scheme under his watch
"We're going to be disruptive and play on the offenses side of the line of scrimmage, get our hands on receivers, and disrupt the timing of the offense." Pendergast explains.
Because coach Pendergast recruited many of the guys on USC's roster at one point or another, he feels that basing them out of the 3-4 scheme will utilize their personnel the best. Therefore, they'll spend some time here in the offseason trying to see how the personnel that played a 4-3 scheme last season fits into the new plans.
