Things are as good with Tulane football as just about anyone inside the program can care to remember. After winning four games total in the 2011-12 seasons, the Green Wave moved to 5-2 with a 36-33 triple-overtime defeat of East Carolina on Saturday. Tulane’s 3-0 conference record has them tied for first place in Conference USA’s West Division and one victory away from the school’s first bowl game since 2000.
“People are beginning to get back onboard,” head coach Curtis Johnson (a former Saints assistant) told SI.com’s Stewart Mandel on receiving congratulatory text messages from Saints owner Tom Benson and Mickey Loomis after the game. “They’re starting to act like there’s college football again here in New Orleans.”
So now, with no game on the schedule until Tulsa comes to New Orleans on October 26, Johnson is giving his team the entire week off.
“I told them, if they win, I’ll give them the week off,” said Johnson. “I didn’t want to renege on my deal.”
We did a simple google search and there are plenty of coaches that have given their team a week off in the middle of the season; but you still have to be impressed with CJ. How many of us expected Tulane to be 5-2? …
