Hal Mumme will leave SMU for the head coaching job at Belhaven (Miss.)
Belhaven University launched its football program in 1998. The Blazers are 76-97 all-time, and went 3-8 in 2013. I can't profess to be an expert on Belhaven football, but I'm going to go ahead and declare this the best day in Blazers history, as sources tell FootballScoop that Hal Mumme will be the program's next head coach.
Mumme will leave his post as SMU's offensive coordinator, where he helped the Mustangs jump from 63rd to eighth in passing offense and 92nd to 41st in total offense in his one season on the Hilltop, for an NAIA school in Jackson, Miss. Most coaches wouldn't leave an FBS coordinator position for such a job, but Mumme has built his career doing what most coaches wouldn't do. Conventional thinking wouldn't have created the Air Raid offense.
Mumme, 61, just is a head coach - the SMU job was his first as an assistant since 1985. He holds a 135-119-1 career mark at Iowa Wesleyan, Valdosta State, Kentucky, Southeastern Louisiana, New Mexico State and McMurry.
