Joe Woodley - 2013 NAIA Coordinator of the Year

2013-CoY-180x225

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Joe Woodley (Grand View) as the 2013 FootballScoop NAIA Coordinator of the Year presented by ProGrass.

It was a dream season for Joe Woodley in many ways. He got to coach with his father, Mike. His defense ranked among the top six nationally in five major categories. And, most importantly, that outstanding defense served as the backbone for Grand View's first national championship run.

Joe Woodley

To put it simply, Grand View was the most dominant team you never saw. After winning their first two games by scores of 21-16 and 24-21, the Vikings' next dozen games (all wins) featured exactly one team that played them to within eight points. Every other foe lost by 12 points or more. Grand View's average margin of victory after Sept. 7 was 25.9 points.

Domination like that is not possible without a formidable defense, and that's what Woodley created. The Vikings ranked second in NAIA's scoring defense totals, limiting opponents to 15.4 points per game. Only three foes managed to top the 17-point barrier.

Woodley's defense ranked second nationally in total defense, allowing just 273.4 yards per game, and tied for second in yards per play at 4.1. Opponents attempted 496 rushes against the Vikings and gained only 1,417 yards (101. 2 yards per game, third nationally) for 2.9 yards per carry (also third nationally) and 13 touchdowns.

Through the air, opponents connected on 220-of-436 passes (50.5 percent) for only 2,410 yards (5.53 yards per attempt) with 15 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. The Vikings' 99.1 defensive pass efficiency rating was the sixth-best in NAIA. On top of those 436 attempts, the Vikings created 56 sacks for a loss of 337 yards, the most total sacks and lost yardage in NAIA.

"I'm particularly proud of Joe and the way he relates to his players," Grand View head coach Mike Woodley said. "He builds a great rapport with them and really earns their respect. Joe's been here with me from the beginning and helped me build this program from the ground into a championship program. I couldn't be more proud of him and the entire defensive staff."

Five of Woodley's defenders earned BSN All-America honors, and two linebackers were named AFCA/NAIA All-Americans.

Hailing from West Des Monies, Iowa, Woodley played at Iowa State from 1999-03. He spent two seasons as defensive backs and linebackers coach at St. Ambrose, and the 2006-07 seasons as the defensive line and linebackers coach at Johnston High School under his brother, Brian. He then moved to Grand View in 2008 to help launch the program.

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by ProGrass are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Ken Fasnacht - Southern Oregon, Lucas Lueders and Collin Prosser - Morningside, Monty Roe - Missouri Valley and Woodley) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel.

Woodley will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention in January.

Woodley is the inaugural winner of FootballScoop's NAIA Coordinator of the Year award.
