Lawrence Dawsey - 2013 Wide Receivers Coach of the Year

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Lawrence Dawsey (Florida State) is the 2013 FootballScoop Wide Receivers Coach of the Year presented by ProGrass.

If Jameis Winston is smart, he ripped off a chunk of that Heisman Trophy and handed it to his wide receivers coach. Dawsey churned out what is widely accepted as the absolute best receiving corps in college football and, in turn, helped turn the Seminoles' offense into an absolute juggernaut. 

The strength of Florida State's passing attack is in its depth; the 'Noles have three wideouts who would serve as a No. 1 option on 100 other college football teams. 

First, there's Rashad Greene. The junior leads the team with 67 catches for 981 yards and nine touchdowns. Sophomore Kelvin Benjamin checks in second with 50 grabs for 957 yards and 14 touchdowns, tied for the sixth-most in college football. Finally, senior Kenny Shaw rounds out the trio with 52 catches for 929 yards and six touchdowns.

With a typical night against Auburn in the BCS National Championship game, Florida State will become the only BCS team to claim three 1,000-yard receivers. And adding another weapon to Winston's arsenal is junior tight end Nick O'Leary with 33 grabs for 557 yards and seven touchdowns. 

As a unit, Florida State's 40 touchdown catches are the third-most in FBS, and the Seminoles' 10.3 yards per attempt rank second in FBS. Of Florida State's 268 completions, 180 (67.2 percent) have gone for 10 yards or more, the sixth most in college football, and 71 went for at least 20 yards - fifth-best in FBS. 

Individually, Greene earned First Team All-ACC honors, Benjamin and O'Leary were named Second Team All-ACC performers and Shaw garnered a Third Team All-ACC nod from the league's coaches. 

As a team, Florida State led the nation in scoring offense with 53 points per game, and needs just 28 points in the BCS title game to produce the most points in the history of college football. The club ranks fifth in the country in total offense (529.4 yards per game), and leads the country with 7.81 yards per play. No team has cracked the 7.7 barrier since Hawaii set the NCAA record (8.6) in 2006. 

A 1991 Florida State graduate, Dawsey broke into college coaching as a graduate assistant on Nick Saban's famed 2003 staff. From there, he spent three seasons coaching wide receivers at South Florida before reuniting with Jimbo Fisher in Tallahassee in 2007, and he was promoted to passing game coordinator in conjunction with Fisher's ascension to head coach in 2010. Dawsey hails from Dothan, Ala. 

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by ProGrass are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (David Beaty - Texas A&M, Dawsey, Keith Gaither - Ball State and Josh Gattis - Vanderbilt) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. The prior winners selected this year's winner.

Dawsey will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention in January.
