Turning around a program that went 0-12 just a season after winning 12 straight is no easy task, and Todd Monken knew that winning was going to be an uphill battle in his first season at Southern Miss.
After throttling UAB Saturday 62-7, and earning his first win as a head coach, Monken was understandably emotional.
"It's funny, we talk all the time about why we do this, and you just felt it. That's what you do it for, to sing the fight song in the locker room with each other. It is the toughest thing in life, this game because it takes so many of us to make it work, that's what hard, feeling like 'I did my part, but we still didn't win'. That's why we count on each other, and bring people with you, so that you can taste this."
"There is nothing like it. There is no drug, there is no alcohol that makes you feel like this...it just doesn't. This is special."
Athletic director Bill McGillis then presented Monken with the game ball and shared some encouraging words about the direction of the program.
