North Carolina has big plans and special unis for 'Zero Dark Thursday'

We're more than a month away from North Carolina's Thursday night date with Miami (October 17), but the folks in Chapel Hill have already got the hype machine rolling.

The Miami game has been chosen as the North Carolina's Tar Pit game, one game a year in which the Heels will don special uniforms. And if you've read the title of this article, you already know what color the Tar Heels will wear.

“The Tar Pit is black so that’s where that has sprung from. We’re just trying to get to our history and our heritage of being the Tar Heels,” athletics director Bubba Cunningham told the Daily Tar Heel.

North Carolina released a video of its black uniforms (along with new blue and white looks) back in April:

Miami, 2-0 and fresh off a gigantic win over Florida, will be heavy favorites in its three games between now and October 17. North Carolina has two ACC road games (at Georgia Tech Saturday and at Virginia Tech on Oct. 5) sandwiching a home date with East Carolina on September 28.

Zero Dark Thursday will mark North Carolina's first Thursday home game since October 22, 2009, the night of a 30-27 loss at the hands of Florida State.

“I think it’s a good boost to our football program to be shown nationally, especially against as quality of an opponent as Miami,” Cunningham said. “Now, we don’t want a steady diet of non-Saturday games because college football is built on a Saturday tradition. But I think occasionally it’s something good for us to do.”
