Peyton on Ole Miss job: I'm 0-10 as an assistant
Co-chairman of the search committee, Archie Manning, plans to leave no stone unturned in the search for the next head coach at Ole Miss.
Archie said that he has even received a handful of emails from people suggesting that his son Peyton retire and take the helm of the Rebels. When Archie told Peyton about the inquiries, Peyton's response was to tell them "I'm 0-10 as an assistant with the Colts". Archie did add that "Peyton, some of his teammates and a couple of coaches put their heads together and recommended a few people."
Eli Manning's input was simply "Get a good one".
Archie says that he isn't going to divulge names, but also said that the school has no shortage of qualified candidates.
"A proven name (as a head coach) is good, but at the same time, every head coach out there has been an assistant at one time. So it wouldn't be wise for us to look away from assistants. We're looking at everyone, even in the pro ranks."
The five member search committee is being aided by the search firm of Eastman and Beaudine out of Texas.
For what it's worth, Mike Leach reports that he has not been contacted by Ole Miss.
