Just a few weeks ago Kevin Sumlin made the decision to promote co-offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital to offensive coordinator for their bowl game against Duke. Clarence McKinney, who called plays throughout the course of the season, would focus on coaching the running backs moving forward.
While Spavital is well regarded in the coaching profession as a very creative offensive mind, calling the plays at a storied program like Texas A&M comes with a unique set of expectations and challenges, so clearly, Sumlin saw something in Spavital that convinced him to shuffle the staff around.
As the Aggies prepare for the Chick-fil-A bowl, Sumlin was asked what kind of advice he's offered his new young coordinator, and of course it boiled down to swagger.
"I just told him to be confident in what you're doing, be multiple in what you're doing, and we'll have some new wrinkles. We're not going to reinvent the wheel in a week and a half, but we will add a few new wrinkles." Sumlin noted.
"More than anything else I just want him to be confident in what he's doing, and we'll communicate during the game."
Spavital has a bright future in this profession, so it will be interesting to see what the Aggies are able to do against, perhaps, the best (and most well coached) Duke team to ever take the field.
