With all due respect to Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State, North Dakota State, the Seattle Seahawks and the entire ocean of high school football teams, the team having the best season in all of football is Newtown High School.
With a 42-7 rout of rival Masuk High on Tuesday, Newtown moved to 12-0 this season and earned the top spot in Connecticut's Class LL state tournament. Should Newtown advance to the state finals - with a shot to win its first title since 1992 - they would play on either December 13 or December 14, the one-year anniversary of the unspeakable tragedy that hit nearby Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012.
Newtown has worn 26 decals on its helmets all season in remembrance of the 26 people that lost their lives at Sandy Hook.
"Our players are hungry to win the championship to give everyone in town a great Christmas present and something to feel happy about a year after such a horrible tragedy," head coach Steve George told Reuters.
