The Biggest Anti-Turnaround Jobs of 2013

Yesterday we published the list of the biggest statistical turnarounds in college football from 2012 to 2013, and today we're looking at the flip side of this trend.

On the surface, most of these drops make sense. Of the 10 squads to drop 50 or more spots in the national total offense rankings, half of them changed head coaches from last season to today. And while the coaching staffs remained the same at schools like West Virginia and Texas A&M, mass attrition on their respective offensive and defensive depth charts is the culprit for their change in real estate.

A word of warning, though. Of the close to two dozen separate teams represented on this list, only Fresno State and the strength of its strong offense led by a prolific senior quarterback has managed to improve its record by more than a game from mid-November 2012 to mid-November 2013.

More commonly, there's a drop and often a dramatic one. Let's look at turnover margin. While the five most-improved turnover margin teams have combined for 38 wins thus far in 2013 - after winning 32 in all of 2012 - the five biggest turnover margin drops have correlated with a drop in wins; the five teams are a cumulative 23-24 right now after owning a collective 35-12 record at this point last season, and every one of the five teams are at least one win behind where they stood through 11 Saturdays in 2012.
