It took 90 tries and almost 13 years, but North Park University (D-III - IL) finally got their first conference win since 2000 yesterday with a win over Carthage (D-III - WI).
On a rainy day in The Windy City the Viking defense forced five turnovers, and managed to overcome a nearly hour and a half lightning delay to score 22 points and escape with a 22-20 win.
For those of you unfamiliar with small college football in the Midwest, the CCIW is highly regarded as one of the top four conferences in small college football. With programs like North Central, Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan (perennial top 25 contenders) on top of the conference year after year the runner up normally finds themselves in the front of the line for an at-large bid in the NCAA playoff at the end of the season, based on strength of schedule. Needless to say, each week is an absolute slugfest.
This win marks a great opportunity for the program to overcome a monumental mental barrier. After 12 seasons of finishing 0-7 in conference play, this win will certainly allow the program to move on to do much bigger and better things.
Big shout out to first year Viking head coach Michael Conway, his staff, and the team on notching a huge win for the program.
