UMass open and transitioning to the MAC

The University of Massachusetts football program will transition from the FCS to a member of the FBS Mid-American Conference starting in 2012.

UMass has sponsored football since 1879 and have compiled a 556-530-51, along with 20 conference titles and 1 national championship (1998) and they also played for the title in 2006.

Going hand in hand with the move will be a change of venue, as UMass will play all of its home games (starting in 2012 and going through 2013) in Gillette Stadium, about 40 minutes from campus Boston and about 2 hours from campus. After 2013, they will play a minimum of 4 home games at Gillette through the 2016 season.

UMass finished this season 5-6, 3-5 in conference play. They were 6-5 in 2010, 5-6 in 2009, 7-5 in 2008, 10-3 in 2007 and 13-2 in 2006.

Head coach Kevin Morris (18-19 as head coach in 3 seasons) has been released. Prior to his time as head coach, Morris served as offensive coordinator for five seasons.

The athletic director says they will immediately begin a national search.

They will open up their FBS season next year at Connecticut.
