Update on New Mexico's opening

Yesterday Mike Locksley was relieved of his duties as head coach at New Mexico and associate head coach / defensive coordinator George Barlow will serve as interim head coach for the rest of this season.

There will be typical speculation, including some very prominent names, over the next few weeks. We'll speak with the guys involved and keep you posted.

In the meantime, we took a look at the historical records of previous New Mexico coaches...

The last head coach to have a .500 overall coaching record was Joe Morrison who coached the Lobos from '80-'82 (yep, that's 30 years ago). Prior to him, a young man named Marv Levy last did it in '58-'59 when he won 14 of 20 games as head coach.

In more recent memory, Rocky Long was just under .500 in 11 seasons ('98-'08) and Dennis Franchione was also just under .500 in his 6 seasons ('92-'97).
